Make Some Noise (1994)

Andrew Munger is a documentary filmmaker from Toronto who, in 1994 (when hip hop rarely even played on college radio), made a film about this largely obscure hip hop culture exploding in Toronto.

Produced by his imprint Ultramagnetic, Make Some Noise, serves as a document for underground hip hop in Canada. It includes a rap-star cast, which includes early appearances by Ghetto Concept, Thrust, a youthful Mos Def, Dan-E-O, Wio-K, Da Grassroots and Farley Flex. The backdrop of the film mostly takes place in the neighbourhoods of Rexdale, Bloorcourt, Scarborough and the once lauded CKLN, Ryerson University’s community radio station.

At the time of its release, Make Some Noise, received ample press coverage and it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and played at Hot Docs. Despite a distribution deal offered by TV Ontario and garnering interest from the CBC, the film was never bought and subsequently, it was never widely distributed.

An action-thriller about a writer who takes an experimental drug that allows him to use 100 percent of his mind. As one man evolves into the perfect version of himself, forces more corrupt than he can imagine mark him for assassination.

Out-of-work writer Eddie Morra's (Cooper) rejection by girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) confirms his belief that he has zero future. That all vanishes the day an old friend introduces Eddie to NZT, a designer pharmaceutical that makes him laser focused and more confident than any man alive. Now on an NZT-fueled odyssey, everything Eddie's read, heard or seen is instantly organized and available to him.

As the former nobody rises to the top of the financial world, he draws the attention of business mogul Carl Van Loon (De Niro), who sees this enhanced version of Eddie as the tool to make billions. But brutal side effects jeopardize his meteoric ascent...

In Brooklyn, amid drug deals, violence, casual racism, poverty, housing projects, and corrupt cops, we follow three officers: Tango, African-American, working undercover, believing he's earned a promotion to a desk job but told he has to set up the bust of an ex-con who saved his life; Sal, who'll commit murder to get cash to buy a house big enough for his family; and, Eddie, the precinct's oldest beat cop, a week to go before retirement, assigned to mentor an earnest rookie. Can this end well for any of the three?
